National Dog Show Has Surprise Winner, Strange Contenders, and New Breeds

For the first time in 40 years, the same breed has taken the top award two years in a row in a major competition. Sky, is this year’s top dog and the second Wire Fox Terrier to win the National Dog Show. The English Springer Spaniel is the only other dog to accomplish this distinguished honor of winning a back-to-back awards, which was at Westminster Dog Show back in 1971 and 1972.

Sky’s beautiful coat, build, and stunning personality made her shine. This was no easy feat as there were over 1,500 other contestants and 160 breeds. Then she had to compete against six other group winners to come out on top.

The Six Top Breeds Representing Each Class

The competitors for the top spot included a beautiful Bearded Collie from the Herding Group, a Tibetan Spaniel from the Non-Sporting Group, an English Foxhound from the Hound Group, a Great Dane from the Working Group, an Affenpinscher from the Toy Group, and a Field Spaniel from the Sporting Group.

Unusual-Looking Contenders

There were a few times during the dog show that the family would stop their conversations and say, “What was that?” A recent addition to the AKC that got the most stares was the Xoloitzcuintli, also known as the Mexican Hairless. You can read more about them and other new breeds that were introduced last year here.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier has an unusual appearance, for sure.

The Bedlington Terrier looks like a lamb!

The Chinese Crested is a head-turner!

The Komondor looks like a mop and a dog in one!

New Breeds this Year

The National Dog Show is also spotlighting two newly recognized breeds this year including the Russell Terrier and Treeing Walker Coonhound.
