When I have an ill child, or one of us is having a rough day, our dogs and, even the cat, take note and snuggle up close. But now dogs have been trained to use their sense of smell to detect disease, specifically the highly transmittable Clostridium difficile, (C. difficile, C. diff) a bacterial infection that causes severe diarrhea and dehydration, affecting an estimated 14,000 people in the U.S. annually. Rare Wild Dog Caught on Camera for the First Time in 23 Years

new-guinea-singing-dog-3-510x600There have been no verified sightings of the New Guinea Singing Dog in Papua New Guinea since the 1970s, so they were considered either rare or possibly extinct in the wild until an explorer to the remote mountainous regions photographed one in August 2012. In fact, a team spent nearly a month searching unsuccessfully for one to breed in the mid 1990’s.

Driving Dogs Learn New Tricks for a Good Cause

190623-dogs-driving-carsThese mutts are on a mission! The SPCA of Auckland, NZ has a goal of making the public aware that dogs in shelters are highly intelligent, capable companions and decided to teach three adoptable dogs how to drive a car.

Mark Vette, the trainer, who has worked on numerous movie sets, had his doubts about being able to execute the project, even if it was for a good cause. The vehicles had to be modified to be operable by dogs, but all the controls would be done by the dogs: starting, the pedals, steering, and stopping! Continue reading

As I was shopping at the local mall and generally overwhelmed by the mass of holiday shoppers, I was pleased to have a friendly young woman chat with me as she rang up my purchases. I commiserated with her about the stress of dealing with the masses through the holiday season, but she said it was nothing compared to getting through college finals and balancing a job in retail through the busiest time of the year.

Reprieve: “Woe to those who lay a finger on the cats,” Declares Mayor of Rome

Torre-Argentina-Cat-Sanctuary-in-Rome-Faces-ExtinctionThere has been a cat fight between archeologists and a cat shelter that services the colony of cats in an area of crumbling ruins in central Rome called Torre Argentina. This site was a meeting place for politicians and the place that Brutus stabbed Julius Caesar in 44 B.C. Despite the area’s violent heritage, the ruins offer a peaceful reprieve from the surrounding bustle of the city.
