Feline Friday: Super Cats Weathered Sandy

Dear Gentle Readers,

At BaxterBoo.com, we’ve been concerned about our furry and non-furry friends on the East Coast and the catastrophic storm they’ve been through this week. I have heart for the stray cat populations because of my own experience of not knowing where my forever home would be… not once, but twice. So I am pleased to give you an update on some of these cats in the affected areas. Continue reading

Tragic Case of Cat Hoarding: 113 Dead Kittens, 51 Live Cats in California

Usually I prefer to keep Feline Fridays upbeat, but with the recent news release about a search and rescue operation in which 113 dead kittens and 51 live adult cats were found housed in horrible conditions, it was clear that the issue of animal hoarding needs to be addressed. This particular story is from Seaside, California, but a similar story just came out of Kansas City, Missouri which gives better insight into how the desire to love and nurture can turn into an unhealthy situation that affects the cats, people, and whole communities. Animal Advocates, Part 4: DogTeezers by Nova New York

Have you ever felt overwhelmed about the needs of this world, and wondered how you could make a difference? Many of us have learned to cope by sealing our hearts up against the hurts we see, believing that we are unable to make much of a difference as just one person. Continue reading

Feline Fridays: CatFest 2012 – Pawsitively Successful!

I had the privilege of attending the Denver Dumb Friends League’s fourth annual CatFest. Over 2,000 people attended which shows that there are more than a few of us crazy cat ladies around! And, surprisingly, there are quite a few crazy cat guys out there too! Gone is the stereotype of men who love cats being aberrant misfits.

Much of this reversal in perception is due to Jackson Galaxy, the “Cat Daddy” who stars in Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell” television show, now in its third season. He has brought a masculine, tattooed, rock and roll edge to cat advocacy, and that is a beautiful thing to see. In fact, Jackson Galaxy himself came to the CatFest and offered one-on-one advice, autographs, and photos for fans. I was struck by the genuine concern and individualized suggestions for each issue that people presented to him regarding cat behavior. Continue reading

Feline Fridays: Squeeze Into National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!

It’s okay to be a procrastinator sometimes, because good things come to those who wait! And your perfect addition to your family could be waiting just for you. Right now, many shelters are running specials, sometimes waiving adoption fees for cats entirely! This is truly amazing because the cost of adopting out a cat that includes sterilization, microchipping, and medical care is around $300, so the fact that you can get a lifetime companion for free or low cost is an exceptional value! Single Cat Syndrome – Why Your Cat Might Need a Buddy

Does your cat nip and bat at you as you walk by? Does your fabulous feline sometimes turn ferocious unexpectedly, even when being petted? If your cat is rather unpredictably aggressive with you and is your only cat, it may be what’s called “single cat syndrome.” Continue reading

June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!

This is me with my other adopted sister Cali.

How perfect is it that the first day in June would fall on a Feline Friday?! It’s destiny, I tell you! And it gives me the chance to talk about something that is very near and dear to my heart: Adoption. Specifically, the adoption of shelter cats. See, folks, I myself have been adopted from from a shelter… twice. I consider myself very lucky… blessed even! Because I know that thousands of cats are euthanized every year because there just simply aren’t enough homes for all of us.

So in honor of National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, I’ve compiled some lists to show that cats are suitable for all kinds of situations! Continue reading

Feline Fridays: From the Desk of Ms. Boo – Dating Disaster Averted!

Dear Gentle Readers,

As you know, we cats are masters of observation. My mistress, Mary, has been acting a bit peculiar. Yesterday she was seen grooming herself excessively, and we cats interpret that as a ploy of self assurance and is even a self-soothing behavior. This was confirmed when I brought her her favorite toy (the Kong Swizzle Teaser) and she didn’t even notice! She was definitely nervous. Perhaps I am guilty of being cathropomorphic, attributing feline emotions to my human, but one of the reasons I think we get along so well is that we have similar personalities. We just click!
