Hairless Cats: A Howl-o-ween Tribute

It’s a Freaky Feline Friday! In honor of the season, I set out to write about some of the more unusual, slightly scarier-looking members of the domestic cat world. I thought an article featuring a few members of the hairless cat breeds would be a fun freak show that would be much more interesting than talking about black cats, which are not scary at all.

When my wandering coworkers were stopping in their tracks and staring at the hairless cats on my computer screen, I knew I was on to something! Now, several hours later with much sleep deprivation, this blog isn’t going anywhere like I thought it would!  Continue reading

Feline Fridays: Circus Cats!

Dear Gentle Readers,

It’s the 12th Day of Dogtober… I can’t hardly even choke out that word, it’s so overdone! So I’m renaming it Catober! It is Feline Friday, after all!

I do, however, approve of today’s Circus theme. The reason for that is that there are simply dozens of videos of cats in circuses that I’m dying to show you! And not just my big cat cousins either. Continue reading

Feline Fridays: The Proud History of Storybook Cats

Dear Gentle Readers,

It’s the 5th Day of Dogtober, (I never signed off on that name, by the way) and BaxterBoo.com is doing a tribute to storybook characters. You may have noticed all that silliness with a castle, a prince, a princess, and a frog. I have to ask… where are the stories and tributes to cats? We’re lucky to have a black cat show up in one of the graphics for Halloween, and that is just so cliche. If I have anything to do with it, a cat will be making an appearance in our Dogtober themes!

This omission made me realize that I need to do a better job of educating our public. Cats have always held a prominent spot in literature, and well-known authors have said wonderful things about us, even going so far as to claim we are Muses. Continue reading

Meet the Breed: Siamese

I asked for a Siamese cat when I turned 12, which is a logical birthday request, since a doll and makeup just weren’t quite appropriate (at least back in the old days.) The tween and teenage years can be awkward, but sharing them with a beautiful, playful, friendly cat made that season of life much more enjoyable.

My mother was able to find me a kitten from a breeder at a fairly remote location in Colorado. I’ll never forget driving to their home and seeing several curious, beautiful, blue eyes staring at me from the woods as the sun filtered through the leaves. It was stunning and almost magical to my imaginative young mind. When I saw my new kitten, I knew she must have the most beautiful name imaginable: Jessica! Continue reading

Feline Friday: Cat Fantasy Furniture

I saw this amazing design today from a college student in Korea that seeks to satisfy both cat and human comfort simultaneously. Half of Korea’s 50 million inhabitants are living in the capital Seoul, so space is at a premium with tiny, cramped apartments. Seungji Mun designed a sofa with tubes running through it for cats to climb and explore while the human companion relaxes. This was his senior project. Mun is actually more of a dog person, but if the cats and their converts have anything to do with it, I’m sure they will encourage Mun to put his project into full production very soon!

Here are some other stunningly imaginative ideas that you won’t want to miss! Continue reading

Feline Friday: Lucky Kitten Survives 100-Mile Trip Inside Bumper

Apparently, no one told this 6-week kitten that black cats have traditionally been considered unlucky, or that an unauthorized joy ride might use up most of her nine lives.

Stacey Pulsifer of Plattsburgh, N.Y., had been traveling between three towns for events related to a wedding. She estimates it was nearly 100 miles of interstate highway driving in her Jeep before she went through a drive-thu for coffee at a McDonald’s. Continue reading

Feline Friday: Finally! Cats Get Their Own Film Fest!

Dear Gentle Readers,

We cats rule the Internet. We are YouTube sensations. It was just a matter of time before we were given the recognition we deserve as artists and actors. We know you feel guilty about hiding in your cubicles watching us, hoping your coworkers don’t see… Continue reading

Feline Fridays: Cats Make a Difference for Seattle Teen Cancer Patient

Seattle’s Children’s Hospital went the extra mile for 16-year-old Maga Barzallo Sockemtickem, who spent 11 months in the hospital while waiting for a compatible bone marrow donor. Because of her suppressed immune function, she was unable to have the comfort of her beloved cat Merry, so the hospital social media coordinator suggested making a post on their Facebook homepage requesting cat photos to encourage their young charge. From the Desk of Ms. Boo: How to Help Your Human Get Ready to Travel

Dear Gentle Readers,

Mistress Mary is all stressed out. She gets this way when she has to go out into the big world. And it is a scary world out there… I really don’t blame her. I took a flying leap over one of my dog siblings who was being let outside (I was imagining I was a superhero) and found myself unexpectedly out the door.

I was so freaked out, I spent the day under the deck while she was at work. The boys tried to coax me out, but Ms. Mary makes me feel the safest, ever since that day I melted into her arms at the shelter. I wasn’t going to come out until she got me. That experience was enough to let me know that staying home is best, unless she takes me to work, of course. I love going to BaxterBoo. I mean, they need me. Who else will test out the best kitty toys?

Anyway, back on topic… Ms. Mary is going on vacation. To some strange place called Alaska. I prefer not to go. Too cold. Too wet. It seems their best feature is salmon, and I hope she brings me back some! That would make a delightful belated birthday present (after all, I just turned 1 on July 21!) Continue reading
