There are now over 1,800 reports of dogs being sickened and even dying from chicken jerky treats made in China due to kidney failure. The FDA finally released their test results after msnbc.com reported that they were denied the requested information. Without confirmed contaminants, however, the FDA is unable to force a recall. Baby, it’s hot outside! And if you’re like me, it’s hot inside too since I’m probably the only person in the U.S. suburbs that doesn’t have air conditioning. Yes, I hear your collective gasp. So we have developed tips for keeping our cool. Like people, dogs can suffer from sunburns, dehydration, and heat stroke. But for dogs, keeping cool can be especially tricky since they can only regulate body temperature through sweating through their foot pads, by panting, and drinking water.
For some breeds, like this pug and other snub-nosed varieties, breathing issues can be exacerbated during hot spells, so keeping cool for them is particularly important. But all dogs must be looked after in the heat. Continue reading →
There have been extensive pet food recalls in the last month for salmonella contamination. As of late, 16 people have also gotten sick from handling tainted pet food, infected pets, and/or coming into contact with contaminated pet feces. Diamond Pet Foods has expanded their recall list 8 times to include 39 states, and now their website has a vague reference to cat food being affected as well. In fact, two cats have died and another is ill at a shelter in Montreal, Canada after ingesting Diamond-brand cat food. Continue reading →
