I had the privilege of attending the Denver Dumb Friends League’s fourth annual CatFest. Over 2,000 people attended which shows that there are more than a few of us crazy cat ladies around! And, surprisingly, there are quite a few crazy cat guys out there too! Gone is the stereotype of men who love cats being aberrant misfits.
Much of this reversal in perception is due to Jackson Galaxy, the “Cat Daddy” who stars in Animal Planet’s “My Cat From Hell” television show, now in its third season. He has brought a masculine, tattooed, rock and roll edge to cat advocacy, and that is a beautiful thing to see. In fact, Jackson Galaxy himself came to the CatFest and offered one-on-one advice, autographs, and photos for fans. I was struck by the genuine concern and individualized suggestions for each issue that people presented to him regarding cat behavior.
There were also several cat-related venders, one of which was Kate Benjamain, Ms. Moderncat, who has also been on “My Cat From Hell.” She partners with Jackson Galaxy giving “catification” suggestions to make home environments more conducive to cats. This is particularly helpful for multi-cat homes where there are interpersonal issues between cats. Simple adjustments like vertical shelving can create space so every cat feels safe. One of her products is the Cat’s Trapeze, which we hope to carry here at BaxterBoo.com soon for our discriminating cat fanciers. Kate also has helpful reviews for cat products at Moderncat.net.
In addition to venders, face painters, and a purebred cat exhibition, there were of course several adoption candidates available. There were so many people there, that it was difficult to find an available cat to visit with! The day was a huge success with 124 pet placements, and 98 of those being cats and kittens!
This was a great community event that brought all sorts of cat lovers together: men, women, people from all kinds of ethic backgrounds, and all ages. I hope other communities will consider hosting similar events.
